Hey everyone!

We are HIPSTER CAFÉ HUNTERS!

In this modern era, Hipsters Cafés are emerging and evolving. We can observe that there are many Hipsters Cafes are open and operated recently. It became a trend for youths nowadays to spend time here. Due to the comfortable environment, variety choices of food & beverages and WiFi connection, availability of power plug makes the Hipsters Cafes an ideal place for customers to sit down with their colleague to have a ‘chit chat’ and sit down to do their works.

In this entry, we will share to you about hipster’s café located in Ipoh. Before we start, let us introduce ourselves.

From left to right Aiman, Alffi, Syasya, Ejat. We are from Unitar International University and currently doing our final semester in Bachelor Of Management.

DAY 1

Why we choose Ipoh as our project location you ask? This is because Ipoh is known to have popular hipster cafés compare to other places. It is also declared by Menteri Besar Perak, Zambry Abd Kadir. In our 3 days 2 nights in Ipoh, we have chosen to visit several places starting with Restaurant Nasi Vanggey, Bits & Bobs, Karat Café, Hello Elvis and Koppe Me.

The Journey Beginssssssss…

So we decided to go Ipoh during semester break which is 31 October ~ 2 November (3days 2 nights). On 31 October, start our journey from KL to Ipoh, it only takes 2 hours and guess what?! We were caught in a highway speed trap after 10km AES Slim River! HAHAHAHA ☹.

Before we visited Bits & Bobs, we went to Restorant Nasi Vanggey or they called it as Nasi Ganja. After that we went to Bits & Bobs for dessert.

Bits & Bobs

Bits & Bobs sells ice ball with the old favourite syrups, homemade ice potongs, coconut shake, and old sweets. Inside the shop, there are also lots of antique stuffs such as retro furniture, vintage items and more. It is located at Kong Heng Square and near to Plan B.

Front shop (very unique and antique)

A bit history about Bits & Bobs, Bits & Bobs was founded in November 2013 by Song & Nikhil. Bits & Bobs tagline is “sejak selalu”, it’s because how Song & Nikhil celebrate their nostalgia and fascination with their childhood years. That’s why they came up with the tagline “sejak selalu”.

Do you still remember?

How they make the Ice Ball?

We ordered four (4) ice ball which is two (2) Sarsi, one (1) Anggur and one (1) Gula Melaka.

From of our opinion, we like the taste of those flavor, but using plastic paper is not suitable for ice ball. When it’s melting, you need to standby tissue or the water will spill over to your clothes.

But why we choose Bits and Bobs? It’s because we missed our childhood. This shop really make us back to childhood. If you want to remember how your childhood is, please do visit here. And you will found a lot of our childhood sweets, things and etc. Last but not least, don’t forget to put #SejakSelalu at your social media.

Menu
Ice Ball: Sarsi, Anggur, Gula Melaka, Sarsi & Rosella
Ice Potong: Cendol, Red bean, Cempedak

Karat Cafe

Karat café quote is “Old is gold” because the owner said that the more old the stuff the more expensive it would be.

Karat café is located right next to Thumb’s cafe. Both of this cafe is owned by Pak Tam sons as he handed the cafe to his sons to run the business. Thumb’s is more like a canteen while Karat is preserving the heritage. These wooden house has been dated back to 1970 first serving as the state government office then an orphanage, and has been abandoned for quite some times until now, beautifully transformed into a theme cafe and a nice halal dining place.

The exterior and interior of the place are not much had change because their wanted to preserved the original structure of the building, the café are very spacious and cozy their really wanted for the customer to feel the environment of home, from the outside view look more like kampung house.

Menu
Karat café menu are more into Malaysian local food. Nevertheless, they also serve western food. This is because they wanted to give variety of choices to customers.

The menu that we choose for that night are “Nasi goreng old is gold” and “Mee sarang burung”. For the drink we choose “Iced chocolate oreo” and “Iced cam (Tea + Coffee)

Our review for Nasi goreng 'old is gold' is 7 out of 10. They serve it with fried prawn, salad and a soup. The price is not that expensive, it cost RM 8.00.

For the second dish we ordered is Mee sarang burung. Why we ordered this dish because we have not tried it yet before. They name after 'Sarang Burung' because the food looks like a birds nest. Mee sarang burung was tasty, and spicy. For those who loves noodles and spicy food, we suggest to try this! As for the price was affordable and it cost RM10.

For the beverage, we ordered Iced Chocolate Oreo for RM7 and Iced Cam (Coffee+Tea) for RM4.

Why we choose Karat café and not other café is because the theme of the café are unique and rare. The preservative, the unique heritage, and they kept the original of exterior and the interior of the house. This café reflact their tagline, which is 'Old is Gold'.

We get the opportunity to have an interview session with Mr. Ezmal Elias, the owner of the Cafe. Credit goes to Mr. Ezmal for spending time with us to share information regarding this cafe.

We really did enjoy the amazing food and the cozy environment.

Hello Elvis

After we ate at Karat Café, we are going to Hello Elvis for dessert!! Hello Elvis is located at Jalan Sultan Iskandar near to Gerbang Malam. Only takes around 5 ~ 10 min from Karat Café. Luckily we came after blackout. Just few minutes after blackout. No customer at all and the best thing is no need to queue!!! ^_^

Hello Elvis was founded in February 2016 by two sisters named Nora Ashikin Ahmad Damanhuri & Zarith Haslinda Ahmad Damanhuri. They named the cafe 'Hello Elvis' for remembering their father because he loved Elvis Presley and he would sing Elvis' songs at home.

Nice place to “LEPAK”

Currently, there're up to thirteen different menus with three different ice cream bases: chocolate, caramel and fruits. Price is between RM6.50 – RM12 for ice cream and for drink is between RM2.50 – RM11.

We ordered “Better Than Ex Boifren / Gurlfren” and “Elvis Twist”. This both ice cream are Elvis Favourite. Customers also can add on topping such as oreo, popcorn, butterscotch chips and etc only for RM0.60 for each but for kinder bueno, churros and marshmallow dipped in choc is RM2.50 for each.

Left: “Better Than Ex Boifren / Gurlfren” (Ice cream with marshmallow dipped in chocolate, kinder bueno & chocolate balls with cereals) RM12

Right: “Elvis Twist” (Ice cream with pretzels & cereals) RM8.50

Other than that, Hello Elvis also served Smoothies and Float, price between RM6.50 to RM11.

From of our view, price for ice cream a bit pricey but….. the staff were friendly with cozy environment! And choice of music is tasteful.

Why we choose Hello Elvis? It’s because of name of shop. Unique name with good story.

DAY 2

We went to New Hollywood Restaurant for breakfast.

Waiting for char kuey teow

super duper delicious

We planned to go Cameron highland after breakfast, but then, it rains. So we decided to play bowling at
 Aeon Kinta City.

After the bowling session, we head to the next cafe!

Koppe Me

Kopi Saya is the original word for Koppe Me. The idea came from owner of Koppe Me. The cafe was founded in July 2016 by Norhasliza Zakaria. Koppe Me is located at Greentown Square nearest to her another restaurant which is Restaurant Simpang Tiga that focus on Indonesia cuisine such as Nasi Padang.

The interior and the exterior of the cafe were comfortable. The environment of the café is suitable for teenagers and family. Koppe Me targeted every age group and open to everyone.
This place was very relaxing for us to enjoy our meal.

Menu

As for the menu in Koppe Me, they provide a variety choices of foods and beverages. For instance, Korean Food, Malay Food, Western Food, and as well as dessert.

The menu that caught our attention was Deep Fried Chicken Chop, Butter Milk Pasta and Spagetthi Seafood Aglio-Olio. For the drinks, we ordered Peach Tea and Honey Lemonade Tea.

The famous and special menu that customers usually order is Buttemilk Pasta and Tom Yam Laksa.

The review that we give for the Deep fried chicken chop is 7 out of 10.  It is not that good and is not that bad. Nevertheless, it is still a good dish. They need to change the flour for the deep fried and their also should serve good fries and the salad for the side dish are quite disappointing because the price for this dish is a bit expensive, it cost RM13.80 but you guys can still try it, it still a good dish.

The second dish are Buttermilk pasta, we choose this because it was the special menu here at Koppe Me, after taste it the dish is kept good and tasty but spicy. Who have that spicy bite for spicy food, you should try this. This dish cost for RM10.80 it still affordable price for good pasta. Lastly, is the Spaghetti seafood aglio-olio. This dish serve a good seafood such as prawn and mussel and also a few of garlic bread. This dish is really simple and tasty, do try for those that love seafood and it only cost for RM15.80.

For the beverage is a simple drink is Peach tea and Honey lemonade tea. The peach tea cost RM3.20 and for the honey lemonade tea cost RM3.80.

Why we choose Koppe Me? Because we're curious about the name of the café and we wanted to know what are the special theme and why it really different for the other café, when we had our dinner and interview the owner. Finally, we have the answer for our curiosity. Koppe Me means kopi me, here their specialty is they coffee. That`s why they choose Koppe Me as the café name.

Thanks to the owner of Koppe Me Miss Norhasliza Zakaria, for her time to share information about the cafe. W
e really enjoy the food and the lovely environment of the café.
